Floating seals—also known as Duo Cone Seals or Heavy-Duty Face Seals—are critical sealing components used in the undercarriage, final drive, travel motor, swing motor, and other rotating systems of construction machinery. Designed for harsh working conditions, these seals maintain lubrication inside the housing while preventing mud, sand, water, and abrasive contaminants from entering. Their long service life, stable sealing performance, and resistance to extreme pressure make them essential for excavators, bulldozers, drill rigs, and mining equipment.
Structure & Working Principle
A floating seal is composed of only two main parts: a pair of precision-machined metal rings and two elastomeric rubber toric rings. The metal rings provide the sealing surfaces, while the rubber rings act as both the elastic support and the loading component that creates face pressure.
When assembled, the rubber toric rings apply axial force on the metal rings, pressing the two hardened faces together. As the machine operates, these faces slide against each other with a film of oil acting as lubrication. This creates a high-efficiency dynamic seal, capable of withstanding severe vibration, shock loads, and continuous rotation.
Material & Heat Treatment Advantage
Floating seals rely heavily on material quality to deliver long-term durability. Our seals are manufactured using:
- High Alloy Cast Steel / Forged Steel Rings
Heat-treated to achieve the required hardness, typically HRC 58–64, ensuring exceptional wear resistance even in abrasive environments. - Premium NBR, FKM, or Highly Saturated Rubber Torics
Selected according to working temperature, chemical exposure, and oil type. These materials provide superior elasticity, compression stability, and anti-aging performance.
The combination of high-hardness metal and high-resilience rubber ensures that the sealing faces maintain uniform pressure, reducing leakage and extending working hours.
Manufacturing Process
To guarantee sealing precision and long lifespan, each floating seal undergoes a controlled manufacturing workflow:
- Material inspection & chemical composition verification
- Precision casting or forging of metal seal rings
- CNC grinding and lapping of sealing surfaces
- Rubber toric ring molding and quality testing
- Hardness, roughness, and dimensional inspection
- Assembly simulation test and leakage verification
- Anti-rust coating & final packaging
The sealing faces are polished to a mirror-like finish, ensuring consistent contact pressure and minimizing friction.
Performance Features
Floating seals provide distinct advantages in demanding operations:
- Exceptional Wear Resistance
Surfaces maintain sealing integrity even under high-impact or abrasive conditions. - Reliable Contamination Protection
Blocks mud, clay, dust, water, and debris from entering the final drive or undercarriage system. - Stable Performance in Extreme Conditions
Works effectively in heavy equipment exposed to high torque, deep excavation, mining, and swamp environments. - Extended Service Life
Durable materials and precision machining significantly reduce maintenance frequency. - Temperature and Pressure Resistance
Suitable for both low-temperature starts and high-pressure continuous cycles.
Wide Compatibility
Our floating seals are available in a full range of sizes for various models and machinery types:
- Excavators (Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, Kobelco, Doosan, Volvo, Hyundai, etc.)
- Bulldozers (Caterpillar D series, Komatsu D series, Shantui SD series)
- Final drives, travel motors, swing motors
- Track rollers, carrier rollers, idlers, and bogies
- Mining machinery, drilling equipment, and special-purpose vehicles
- Custom sizes can also be produced according to drawing or sample.
Installation Method 2: PTFE & O-Ring Installation with Calibration
- O-Ring Installation
Lubricate and place each O-ring into its groove using specialized tools to avoid twisting or over-stretching. - PTFE Slip Ring Installation
Gently expand the PTFE ring using a heated mandrel or forming tool, then place it over the piston or gland.
Allow it to cool and reshape into its groove precisely. - Calibration
Use a calibration tool or press-fit tool to compress the installed seals uniformly and ensure correct fit and compression rate before cylinder reassembly.
This method is especially recommended for high-pressure or precision-fit PTFE seals and wear rings.
Quality Control & Inspection
Every floating seal undergoes strict quality checks before leaving the factory:
- Hardness testing of metal rings
- Dimensional tolerance verification
- Surface roughness measurement (Ra ≤ 0.1μm)
- Rubber compression-set testing
- Leakage and pressure endurance simulation
- Full visual and batch inspection documentation
Our QC system ensures stable performance and consistency even in high-volume orders.
Installation Notes
Correct installation greatly affects seal life. Operators should:
- Clean all mating surfaces and cavities thoroughly
- Lubricate the sealing faces before assembly
- Ensure the rubber torics are not twisted or stretched excessively
- Maintain correct axial preload
- Avoid scratching the polished surfaces during installation
A proper fit ensures maximum sealing efficiency and longevity.
